The Challenge
Our client, who manages a large palm plantation in Ghana covering 6,000 hectares, faced significant challenges with traditional farming methods. Monitoring such a vast area manually was not only labour-intensive but also led to inaccurate data and high costs. The existing methods couldn’t provide real-time information or reliable insights into plant health and count.
The Solution
Aya Data stepped in to transform the client’s farming operations using advanced technology:
1. Data Collection: We used drones equipped with high-resolution cameras and LiDAR sensors to capture detailed images of the plantation.
2. Data Processing: The collected data was processed and converted into detailed images (GeoTIFF files) that our data science team used for analysis.
3. AI Model Development: We labelled these images to train a machine learning model specifically designed to count palm trees and assess their location with 98% accuracy.
4. Interactive Dashboard: We created a user-friendly dashboard integrated with ArcGIS, allowing the client to visualise plant counts and other important farm data in real-time.
The Results
The new system led to significant improvements:
– Accurate Tree Counting: The AI model provided precise counts of palm trees, giving the client a reliable basis for operational decisions.

Future Plans
In the next phase, we’ll integrate the dashboard with a Business Intelligence (BI) system. This will streamline data from daily, weekly, and quarterly inspections into a single, comprehensive view, further improving decision-making and operational efficiency.
